A lot of us with mental illness often say things like “you need to take a walk in my shoes” or “you don’t know what it’s like.” You know what? I honestly hope you never understand.
I wouldn’t wish having a mental illness on anyone. It’s frustrating and terrifying. Sometimes your world doesn’t seem real. Sometimes just getting out of bed is impossible. If you’re like me, you question everything you hear because you don’t know if it’s real or not.
Medication side effects are horrific. I once gained 70 lbs in 3 months on one. One of them put me in the hospital for almost 2 weeks, of which I remember nothing, and when I came home, I was numb from the waist down. One of them landed me in the ER, having a reaction that looked like I was having a seizure (as I was told).
So no, I really hope you never understand. Yes, there is stigma that is out there, but I would never want to abolish it by putting anyone through what we go through.
